Zechariah 5: warning of wickedness

We arrive at Zechariah 5 seeing the visions of prophet Zechariah: a flying scroll and a ‘woman’ personifying wickedness. We shall read the first part: see what God means by wickedness, as shown in the vision of the flying scroll.

Summary: (verses 1-4)

God sees wickedness in the land. He wants His prophets (messengers) to see too and issue warnings.

Wickedness includes: stealing; swearing falsely using God’s name.

God wants HIs people to know He takes action against wickedness; Consequences of wickedness: “I am sending this curse into the house of every thief and into the house of everyone who swears falsely using My Name.”

No house will escape. Note: there is no differentiation between thieves. God uses one description: thief. (Jesus warns of the motives of thief, in John 10:10)

  1. The curses are written in heaven and voluminous. Zechariah saw a scroll measuring 30 feet long and 15 feet wide.
  2. The scroll that contains the curse is going out over the entire land.
  3. The destructive effect of sins is total: ” And my curse will remain in that house and completely destroy it—even its timbers and stones.” (Zechariah 5:4)

The name of God is holy:You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.”

This command is for the whole congregation of God’s people (including priests and every believer): Exodus 20:7 (NKJV) “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.”

The following command is specifically for priests:  Who are the priests? We the people of God, the believers and followers of Jesus Christ are the royal priests for God!
God’s expectation for His priests is: they shall be holy (linking to the requirement that  they not profane the name of God’) so that they may serve God (proclaim the praise of Him in His marvelous light).
They shall be holy to their God and not profane the name of their God, for they offer the offerings of the Lord made by fire, and the bread of their God; therefore they shall be holy.
But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
Revelation 1:6 and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Revelation 5:10 And have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the earth.”
False swearing and stealing (including cheating) go hand in hand:  Leviticus 19:11-13 New King James Version (NKJV) 11 ‘You shall not steal, nor deal falsely, nor lie to one another. 12 And you shall not swear by My name falsely, nor shall you profane the name of your God: I am the Lord. 13 ‘You shall not cheat your neighbor, nor rob him. The wages of him who is hired shall not remain with you all night until morning.

Jesus forbids oaths : 33 “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’ 34 But I say to you, do not swear at all: ..37 But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.” (Matthew 5) (Note: Jesus warns of how one will open a door to the evil one by one’s mouth!)

Jesus warned of the thief of life: John 10:10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

Zechariah 5:1-4 New Living Translation (NLT) A Flying Scroll

I looked up again and saw a scroll flying through the air.

“What do you see?” the angel asked.

“I see a flying scroll,” I replied. “It appears to be about 30 feet long and 15 feet wide.[a]

Then he said to me, “This scroll contains the curse that is going out over the entire land. One side of the scroll says that those who steal will be banished from the land; the other side says that those who swear falsely will be banished from the land. And this is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: I am sending this curse into the house of every thief and into the house of everyone who swears falsely using my name. And my curse will remain in that house and completely destroy it—even its timbers and stones.”
