a tale of two mountains

They have the secret to prosperity. “Give us the towns and the pasturelands.” They asked. So they were given. Why? Because God said so. The Levites are a special people. They do not follow the world or the way of the world. They do not need to and yet they are well provided economically and financially. They get the best towns and cities. They get the best lands and pastures. They own large properties and always at the best locations. Why? Because they follow God faithfully and are in fact the keepers of God’s words and God’s ways for His people. Amazing how a nation of Levites can be raised just to take care of matters of God.

What did they do? They carry the ark of the covenant of God. They are the true leaders of God’s people. They provide the landmark, the direction post, the timing to start and the timing to march ahead. How do they know the right time, right place and right way? God speaks to them through His words and His Spirit. They listen and obey.

Read all about them in the Books of Moses.

Joshua 3:3 and they commanded the people, saying, “When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the priests, the Levites, bearing it, then you shall set out from your place and go after it.

Joshua 8:33 Then all Israel, with their elders and officers and judges, stood on either side of the ark before the priests, the Levites, who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord, the stranger as well as he who was born among them. Half of them were in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel.

Joshua 21:3 So by the command of the Lord the people of Israel gave the Levites the following towns and pasturelands out of their own grants of land.

Joshua 21:8 So the Israelites obeyed the Lord’s command to Moses and assigned these towns and pasturelands to the Levites by casting sacred lots.

Joshua 21:34 The rest of the Levites—the Merari clan—were given the following towns with their pasturelands from the tribe of Zebulun: Jokneam, Kartah,

Joshua 21:41 The total number of towns and pasturelands within Israelite territory given to the Levites came to forty-eight.

Watchman’s notes: Note how the nation was symbolically divided into two halves even then, standing on two opposite mountains, one half to be cursed and the other half to be blessed! Those who left the wilderness (in which they wandered for over forty years in futility) and marched confidently into the promised land of future with the Ark of the Lord their God were blessed. In Today’s terms, this means the nation (or even its half only) led by the Holy Spirit and God’s words will prosper and succeed because they will have the favor of God.
