What does God try to tell us today? “For many are called, but few chosen.” This statement appear twice today, in Matthew 19:30 and 22:14. Why did Jesus say that and to whom? Is this verse speaking of the Jews, who had been first in the things of God at one time, becoming last, and the Gentiles, who had been last, becoming first in the things of God? “God calls everyone to salvation but that doesn’t mean His standards are low. He calls and equips, furnishing all that we need to be in right standing with Him. But those who don’t put on that robe of righteousness by faith will be eternally separated from Him, regardless of whether they were in church among the true believers or not.” (Living Commentary, Andrew Wommack)
Prior to these verses, in Matthew 19:30 Jesus also states, “But many who are first will be last, and the last first.” In context He was in the region of Judea beyond the Jordan, healing great multitudes. The Pharisees came to test Him, little children were brought to Him to be blessed, and a rich young ruler came to Him asking what more good thing (if any other than what he has already done) he has to do to have eternal life. He asked Jesus, “what do I still lack?” (Rather ironically, since he was adamant that he has done all to deserve eternal life). He left disappointedly and sorrowfully. The disciples later queried Jesus who can be saved if riches, achievements and earthly status and recognition cannot give a man precedence over others in terms of entering into the eternal life that only Jesus can give.
What has this got to do with today’s blog title “God also is bearing witness both with signs and wonders”? A lot. In fact, all.
The Holy Spirit reminds this truth in Hebrews 2 which is aptly subtitled, “Do Not Neglect Salvation”. I quote:
Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. 2 For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him,4 God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?
Jesus came to earth, born into a human body, yet demonstrated He is from God and of God, representing every aspect of God. Everything He said and did showed the audience then and now the witness of God Himself of what Jesus came for and what He had accomplished finally before He left earth.
And this is still the message today. God also is bearing witness both with signs and wonders. God is still bearing witness. Signs and wonders, divine healing and divine health. Miracles and wonders. transformation of lives and relationship. Supernatural abundant provisions according to God’s richness in glory. Reconciliation and restoration. The fulfillment of God’s good, perfect, and pleasing will in the believer’s life: spirit, soul and body. All started from Jesus’ time, and is still ongoing. This is grace in action, by God Himself.
Last question: Why does God ever bother? Since few responded anyway. I asked the same too. As I pondered, I heard this reading from the audio Bible, Matthew 18:11-14.
11 For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost.
12 “What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine and go to the mountains to seek the one that is straying? 13 And if he should find it, assuredly, I say to you, he rejoices more over that sheep than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray. 14 Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.
What more can we ask the Father in heaven? His heart is for every lost one, even right now. Take heed.
