concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead. Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for His name,

Be in Christ, be a new creation!

17 Wherefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature: the old things are passed away; behold, they are become new.

17 Therefore if any person is [ingrafted] in Christ (the Messiah) he is a new creation (a new creature altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition] has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come!

17 So then, if anyone is in Christ, that person is part of the new creation. The old things have gone away, and look, new things have arrived!

17 Therefore, if anyone is united with the Messiah, he is a new creation — the old has passed; look, what has come is fresh and new!

17 Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The past is forgotten, and everything is new.

17 When anyone is in Christ, it is a whole new world. The old things are gone; suddenly, everything is new!

Footnotes: 1 2 Corinthians 5:17 When anyone … world Or “Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation.”

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

Footnotes: 1 2 Corinthians 5:17 Or creature

Cross references:

17 Anyone who is joined to Christ is a new being; the old is gone, the new has come.

16-21 This means that our knowledge of men can no longer be based on their outward lives (indeed, even though we knew Christ as a man we do not know him like that any longer). For if a man is in Christ he becomes a new person altogether—the past is finished and gone, everything has become fresh and new. All this is God’s doing, for he has reconciled us to himself through Jesus Christ; and he has made us agents of the reconciliation. God was in Christ personally reconciling the world to himself—not counting their sins against them—and has commissioned us with the message of reconciliation. We are now Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were appealing direct to you through us. As his personal representatives we say, “Make your peace with God.” For God caused Christ, who himself knew nothing of sin, actually to be sin for our sakes, so that in Christ we might be made good with the goodness of God.

17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

17 When someone becomes a Christian, he becomes a brand new person inside. He is not the same anymore. A new life has begun!

16-20 Because of this decision we don’t evaluate people by what they have or how they look. We looked at the Messiah that way once and got it all wrong, as you know. We certainly don’t look at him that way anymore. Now we look inside, and what we see is that anyone united with the Messiah gets a fresh start, is created new. The old life is gone; a new life burgeons! Look at it! All this comes from the God who settled the relationship between us and him, and then called us to settle our relationships with each other. God put the world square with himself through the Messiah, giving the world a fresh start by offering forgiveness of sins. God has given us the task of telling everyone what he is doing. We’re Christ’s representatives. God uses us to persuade men and women to drop their differences and enter into God’s work of making things right between them. We’re speaking for Christ himself now: Become friends with God; he’s already a friend with you.

17 Whoever is a believer in Christ is a new creation. The old way of living has disappeared. A new way of living has come into existence.

17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

Footnotes: 1 2 Corinthians 5:17 Or there is a new creation

Cross references:

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

Footnotes: 1 2 Corinthians 5:17 Or Christ, that person is a new creation.

Cross references:

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

17 This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

Hear God: “My people will no longer be ashamed”

wall of Jerusalem

Isaiah 29

New Living Translation (NLT)

A Message about Jerusalem

29 “What sorrow awaits Ariel, the City of David.     Year after year you celebrate your feasts. Yet I will bring disaster upon you,     and there will be much weeping and sorrow. For Jerusalem will become what her name Ariel means—     an altar covered with blood. I will be your enemy,     surrounding Jerusalem and attacking its walls. I will build siege towers     and destroy it. Then deep from the earth you will speak;     from low in the dust your words will come. Your voice will whisper from the ground     like a ghost conjured up from the grave.

But suddenly, your ruthless enemies will be crushed     like the finest of dust. Your many attackers will be driven away     like chaff before the wind. Suddenly, in an instant,     I, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, will act for you with thunder and earthquake and great noise,     with whirlwind and storm and consuming fire. All the nations fighting against Jerusalem     will vanish like a dream! Those who are attacking her walls     will vanish like a vision in the night. A hungry person dreams of eating     but wakes up still hungry. A thirsty person dreams of drinking     but is still faint from thirst when morning comes. So it will be with your enemies,     with those who attack Mount Zion.”

Are you amazed and incredulous?     Don’t you believe it? Then go ahead and be blind.     You are stupid, but not from wine!     You stagger, but not from liquor! 10 For the Lord has poured out on you a spirit of deep sleep.     He has closed the eyes of your prophets and visionaries.

11 All the future events in this vision are like a sealed book to them. When you give it to those who can read, they will say, “We can’t read it because it is sealed.” 12 When you give it to those who cannot read, they will say, “We don’t know how to read.”

13 And so the Lord says,     “These people say they are mine. They honor me with their lips,     but their hearts are far from me. And their worship of me     is nothing but man-made rules learned by rote. 14 Because of this, I will once again astound these hypocrites     with amazing wonders. The wisdom of the wise will pass away,     and the intelligence of the intelligent will disappear.”

15 What sorrow awaits those who try to hide their plans from the Lord,     who do their evil deeds in the dark! “The Lord can’t see us,” they say.     “He doesn’t know what’s going on!” 16 How foolish can you be?     He is the Potter, and he is certainly greater than you, the clay! Should the created thing say of the one who made it,     “He didn’t make me”? Does a jar ever say,     “The potter who made me is stupid”?

17 Soon—and it will not be very long—     the forests of Lebanon will become a fertile field,     and the fertile field will yield bountiful crops. 18 In that day the deaf will hear words read from a book,     and the blind will see through the gloom and darkness. 19 The humble will be filled with fresh joy from the Lord.     The poor will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. 20 The scoffer will be gone,     the arrogant will disappear,     and those who plot evil will be killed. 21 Those who convict the innocent     by their false testimony will disappear. A similar fate awaits those who use trickery to pervert justice     and who tell lies to destroy the innocent.

22 That is why the Lord, who redeemed Abraham, says to the people of Israel,

My people will no longer be ashamed     or turn pale with fear. 23 For when they see their many children     and all the blessings I have given them, they will recognize the holiness of the Holy One of Israel.     They will stand in awe of the God of Jacob. 24 Then the wayward will gain understanding,     and complainers will accept instruction.

_Ephesians 6:10-20

The Whole Armor of God

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints— 19 and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

Romans 5

21st Century King James Version (KJ21)

1Therefore, being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

2 by whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also, knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

4 and patience, experience; and experience, hope;

5 and hope maketh not ashamed, because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost who is given unto us.

6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

7 For scarcely will one die for a righteous man, yet perhaps for a good man some would even dare to die.

8 But God commendeth His love toward us in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

9 Much more then, being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.

10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.

11 And not only that, but we shall also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

12 Therefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin, so death passed onto all men, for all have sinned.

13 For until the law, sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.

14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the similitude of Adam’s transgression, he being the figure of Him that was to come.

15 But not as the offense, so also is the free gift. For if through the offense of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one Man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.

16 And not as it was by one who sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is for many offenses unto justification.

17 For if by one man’s offense death reigned by one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by One, Jesus Christ.

18 Therefore as by the offense of one, judgment to condemnation came upon all men, even so by the righteousness of One, the free gift unto justification of life came upon all men.

19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of One shall many be made righteous.

20 Moreover the law entered, that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound,

21 that, as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

yom kippur walls

Yom Kippur is a complete Sabbath; no work can be performed on that day. It is well-known that you are supposed to refrain from eating and drinking (even water) on Yom Kippur. It is a complete, 25-hour fast beginning before sunset on the evening before Yom Kippur and ending after nightfall on the day of Yom Kippur. The Talmud also specifies additional restrictions that are less well-known: washing and bathing, anointing one’s body (with cosmetics, deodorants, etc.), wearing leather shoes (Orthodox Jews routinely wear canvas sneakers under their dress clothes on Yom Kippur), and engaging in sexual relations are all prohibited on Yom Kippur.

Most of the holiday is spent in the synagogue, in prayer. In Orthodox synagogues, services begin early in the morning (8 or 9 AM) and continue until about 3 PM. People then usually go home for an afternoon nap and return around 5 or 6 PM for the afternoon and evening services, which continue until nightfall. The services end at nightfall, with the blowing of the tekiah gedolah, a long blast on the shofar.

yom kippur recipe

The fast of Yom Kippur is often broken with smoked fish as in this trout salad. This easy dinner, which can be made ahead, is great for any night, holiday or not. Serve it on a bed of greens to dress it up and add a whole-grain bagel to make it a substantial meal.

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces skinned smoked trout fillet, flaked
  • 1/4 cup minced celery
  • 2 tablespoons minced shallot
  • 2 tablespoons low-fat mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons reduced-fat sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon minced freshly grated lemon zest
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh dill, or 1 teaspoon dried
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • 2 cups mixed salad greens
  • 1 plum tomato, sliced

Preparation

Combine trout, celery, shallot, mayonnaise, sour cream, lemon zest, lemon juice, dill and pepper in a medium bowl. Arrange salad greens and tomato on 2 plates and top with the trout salad.
